Kiruna

Why Visit Kiruna?

Northern Lights

Kiruna is one of the best places in the world to experience the Northern Lights, especially during the dark winter months from September to March. The city’s remote location and minimal light pollution make it an ideal spot for aurora viewing.

Midnight Sun

In contrast to the long winter nights, Kiruna experiences the Midnight Sun from late May to mid-July, where the sun never sets, creating endless daylight and unique opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and midnight picnics.

Ice Hotel

Located just outside Kiruna, the world-famous Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is rebuilt every winter entirely from ice and snow from the nearby Torne River. Visitors can stay overnight in intricately designed ice rooms or tour the hotel to see ice sculptures and art installations.

Sami Culture

Kiruna is in the heart of Sápmi, the traditional homeland of the Sami people, the indigenous population of the region. Visitors can learn about Sami culture, traditions, and reindeer herding, as well as sample traditional Sami cuisine in places like Jukkasjärvi.

Abisko National Park

A short drive from Kiruna, Abisko National Park offers pristine wilderness, excellent hiking trails, and is considered one of the best places in the world for aurora viewing. The Abisko Sky Station is a top destination for both stargazing and watching the Northern Lights.

Winter Sports

Kiruna offers a variety of winter activities, such as dog sledding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing.
