5 Must See Attractions in Stockholm

Sweden

Stockholm is home to numerous museums, that educate its visitors on various subjects from history, to art, to culture and science. In our opinion these are the 5 not to be missed attractions in Stockholm Sweden.

Fotografiska Stockholm

  • Fotografiska Stockholm is a renowned photography museum and one of the largest photography museums in the world. When we visited it had a range of really interesting photography exhibits, and enough space to really allow you to take the time to focus on the photos and the messages the photographer was trying to share. After visiting the museum you must visit the restaurant, where the food is excellent, but it also allows you an opportunity to reflex on the photography you have just seen, before you get back into the hustle and bustle of the world. If you love photography you can’t miss this!

Vasa Museum

  • Our 2nd Stockholm Attraction, is the Vasa Museum which is one of the most popular attractions in Stockholm. The museum is dedicated to showcasing the 17th-century warship, Vasa, that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged in 1961. The Vasa is one of the best-preserved warships of that era. As you enter the museum you will be struck by the sheer size of the ship and the intricacy of the woodwork. There are several floors and a walkway around the whole ship so you can see it from multiple different angles.

Skansen Open Air Museum

  • Arguably the most unique museum on our list. The Skansen Open Air Museum, the oldest open air museum in the world, also includes a zoo, and is located in central Stockholm. The museum showcases Swedish life and culture, with historic buildings and cultural activities. It’s like stepping back in time as you see glassmakers and bakers and get to step inside old churches and buildings. The zoo includes animals such as reindeer, bears, wolves, elk and wolverines. Plus it has some cute more petting friendly animals. You can expect to spend at least a day here, and is a great location to visit if you have kids. Being set on a hill it also has great views of the city, and is conviently located close to ABBA the Museum.

Avicii Experience

  • The Avicii Experience is without doubt the most poignant museum you will visit in Stockholm. For those not familiar with Avicii, he was a renowned Swedish DJ and electronic music producer who passed away in 2018. If you are not familiar with his name, the chances are you are familiar with his music. This interactive museum takes you through his life, sharing stories, photos and music from his life. At the start you’ll be tapping along to the music, but you won’t leave without shedding a tear, as the museum takes you through the last few days of his life and the impact the loss of his life had on his fans.

ABBA The Museum

  • The 5th must see attraction in Stockholm, and arguably the most famous museum in Stockholm is the ABBA Museum. It’s somewhat unsurprisingly this is the case when you think about their music and how it has transcended so many different countries over so many decades. The museum offers a fantastic mix of pop memorabilia and immersion into their world. The latter is really what sets it apart from most music museums. You can sing along in a Karaoke booth, be the fifth member of the band singing on stage, and even virtually try on the band’s iconic costumes. One things for sure, when you leave the museum you will be singing along to at least one ABBA song!

We know there are some famous museums not listed here that you will likely want to visit anyway. The Noble Museum, Viking Museum and Royal Palace are three amazing museums that we enjoyed on our visit and would highly recommend. If you’ve got time you should visit these too!
