Why Visit Banff?

Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Banff is one of Canada’s most iconic travel destinations, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty and adventure. Located in Alberta’s Banff National Park, the town of Banff serves as a gateway to the stunning landscapes of the Rocky Mountains and provides a range of activities for all types of travelers. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking to relax amidst nature, Banff has something for everyone.

Banff National Park

Banff National Park, Canada’s first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, covers over 6,600 square kilometers, and offers awe-inspiring mountain views, crystal-clear lakes, and an abundance of wildlife. For hikers, there are hundreds of kilometers of trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging backcountry treks.

For those less inclined to hike, scenic drives through the park provide plenty of opportunities to admire the landscape, with stops at places like the Bow Valley Parkway, Icefields Parkway, and the iconic Lake Louise.

Lake Louise and Moraine Lake

Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are two of the most photographed lakes in the world, and for good reason. Their stunning blue hues, caused by the reflection of light off rock flour suspended in the water, create an otherworldly scene that draws visitors from all over the globe.

Lake Louise is an iconic destination for both sightseeing and outdoor activities. Visitors can rent canoes and paddle across the serene waters, hike up to the Lake Agnes Tea House for panoramic views, or simply relax and take in the majestic surroundings.

Moraine Lake is just a short drive from Lake Louise, and is equally breathtaking. Surrounded by the Valley of the Ten Peaks, this glacially-fed lake offers an array of hiking trails and opportunities for kayaking or photography. Sunrise at Moraine Lake is especially magical, as the sun’s rays cast a golden glow over the mountains and lake.

Both are extremely popular and it’s very hard to find parking at Lake Louise so early or late visits are best.  To visit Moraine Lake you will need to take a tour as you are unable to park there now.

Banff Gondola

For unparalleled views of Banff and the surrounding mountains, a ride on the Banff Gondola is a must. The gondola takes visitors to the summit of Sulphur Mountain, where they can enjoy 360-degree views of the Bow Valley, Banff townsite, and the surrounding mountain ranges. At the top, there’s an observation deck, a boardwalk that leads to Sanson’s Peak, and interactive exhibits about the area’s natural and cultural history.

The summit also boasts the Sky Bistro, where visitors can dine with a view, making the gondola ride an experience that combines adventure with luxury.

Banff Upper Hot Springs

After a long day of exploring, there’s no better way to relax than by soaking in the Banff Upper Hot Springs. The hot springs offer visitors the chance to unwind in natural, mineral-rich waters while enjoying stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The springs are open year-round, and in winter, the experience becomes even more enchanting as you can soak in the warmth while being surrounded by snow-capped peaks.

Wildlife

Banff National Park is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including grizzly bears, black bears, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, and wolves. While wildlife sightings aren’t guaranteed, keeping a keen eye while driving or hiking can reward you with the chance to see some of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. To increase your chances of spotting wildlife, consider going on a guided wildlife tour. Local guides are knowledgeable about the animals’ habitats and behaviors, ensuring you have a safe and enriching experience.

Winter Sports in Banff

Banff transforms into a winter wonderland from November to March, offering world-class winter sports for those looking for adventure in the snow. The Banff-Lake Louise area is renowned for its skiing and snowboarding opportunities, with three major ski resorts nearby: Banff Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mount Norquay.

Explore the Town of Banff

The town of Banff itself is a charming mountain retreat, offering a variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. Stroll down Banff Avenue to discover cozy cafés, boutique shops, and restaurants serving up local and international cuisine.
