Insurance company Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP) has released its list of the safest countries for Americans (and by that categorization most nationalities) to visit in 2024.
They defined a “safe place” as a destination where travelers are unlikely to experience discrimination or harassment, alongside reduced dangers from epidemics and severe weather conditions.
We’ve traveled to all of the top 3 destinations in the last 12 months and have to agree with the studies’ findings. Not only were all three destinations safe they would probably also rank in the top 3 for stunning sceneries, friendliness and number of bucket list destinations.
So let’s count down the top 3 travel destinations:
#3 Norway
The crime rate in Oslo is spectacularly low with just 39 crimes per 1,000 residents, which makes Oslo the safest part of Norway!
As with most tourist destinations, pickpockets make up the largest amount of crime, especially in the big cities and around train stations. This is especially true in Oslo Central, the main train station, in Oslo.

#2 Switzerland
Switzerland is one of the safest countries in the world and has the most friendly people of almost any country in the world. Again pickpockets and car crime occur in the large cities.
The biggest dangers in Switzerland lie in its landscape especially in the winter months with avalanches, rockslides and blizzards, to name just a few.

#1 Canada
It’s hard to argue with this, although any of the top 3 would have been in my number one travel destinations. The cold weather and low population in Canada, especially outside of the big cities make for safe travels.
As with Switzerland the biggest dangers come from Mother Nature, and this past year we saw a rise in the number of forest fires, which led to poor air quality.

With all these destinations taking some standard precautions when traveling will reduce the dangers. Ensuring you keep valuables secured on you and not visible. Or if you have them in a backpack make sure they are packed in the middle where it’s harder to get them out. With natural dangers make sure you follow all listed precautions and be sure to check the weather in advance, especially in the winter months.
