Travel Planning: Travel Experiences or Travel Destinations

Travel Planning

As we think about vacation planning for next year we’ve realized that we’ve started, albeit inadvertently, to look for travel experiences rather than just travel destinations. By this we mean we are looking for something unique in that location, so it’s not just going to a destination, it’s going to a destination to enjoy a unique experience. The best way to describe it would be to share an example; visiting Tromsø, Norway, versus visiting Tromsø to see the Northern Lights. While visiting Tromsø was beautiful in its own right, seeing the Northern Lights there was an experience!

As you being travel planning your holiday for next year I’d urge you to think not just about travel destinations, with a selfie at each landmark, but to find experiences in those locations, where you can truly appreciate the destination. I’ve shared some suggestions below:

  • Seeing the Northern Lights in Tromsø, Norway
  • Visiting Japan during Sakura season
  • Sightseeing in London during a Royal Event
  • Arriving in Provence during Lavender season

Also if there not any significant times to go to a place maybe you can make an experience of a portion of your trip. For example, getting dressed up to do High Tea in London, in one of the more prestigious locations. It’s these kind of experiences that will live long in the memory.

You can also look online for your preferred destination and see what significant events happen there during the year. Maybe they have a festival or suchlike which will take your holiday to the next level! For example, going to Cannes during the film festival, or going somewhere where there will be a solar eclipse.

One cautionary note: some of these experiences may be so well known that the cost of your holiday is significantly more expensive during this time or the cost to do a specific experience is significantly higher then what you may assume it should be. If you can afford to though, I would urge you to splurge a little. These experiences will be what you look back on in future years and you’ll be so happy you spent your money in a way that generated such happy memories. Plus the mental health benefits of these experiences is immeasurable.

In summary, when travel planning combine a carefully chosen travel destination with thoughtfully curated experiences. By considering your preferences, being open to new discoveries, and maintaining flexibility, you can create a vacation that not only takes you to fascinating places but also provides meaningful and memorable experiences.

Please share any unique experiences you’ve had, we’d love to hear about them!
