17 Mile Drive Pebble Beach CA – Know Before You Go

America

While 17-Mile Drive at Pebble Beach is known for its stunning beauty, there are a few potential downsides that visitors might not anticipate. Here are some things that we noticed when we did this beautiful drive.

Entrance Fee

One of the first surprises might be the entrance fee. Unlike many scenic drives, 17-Mile Drive requires a fee for entry, which can be unexpected for visitors used to free access to natural attractions. The fee can be redeemed if you spend a certain amount at Pebble Beach restaurants, which somewhat mitigates the cost.

Crowds

Given its popularity, certain parts of 17-Mile Drive can get crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons or weekends. You might find yourself competing for parking spaces at popular stops like the Lone Cypress or Spanish Bay. The traffic on the narrow roads can also be frustrating, as slow-moving cars and tour buses can disrupt the peaceful experience you might have been expecting. The crowded conditions can make it challenging to find those serene moments you were hoping for.  It’s for this reason you may want to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Weather

The weather along 17-Mile Drive can be unpredictable. While you might expect sunny skies, the Monterey Peninsula is known for its foggy, cool, and sometimes drizzly conditions, even in the summer. This can obscure the beautiful ocean views and make the experience less enjoyable if you were hoping for clear, sunny weather. The coastal fog, known locally as “June Gloom” (which can extend into other months), can sometimes linger throughout the day, dampening the visual appeal.

Dining

While there are a few dining options along 17-Mile Drive, such as the restaurants at The Lodge at Pebble Beach, they can be quite expensive, and the variety is limited. If you’re expecting a quick and affordable bite, you might be disappointed. It’s a good idea to bring snacks or plan to eat in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea or Pacific Grove, where there are more choices available. The high prices and limited options can be a downside if you’re not prepared.  We decided to purchase food at the Pebble Beach market which meant we could enjoy the food outdoors as we forgot to purchase food on the way in.

Commercialization

Finally, for some, the level of commercialization along 17-Mile Drive might be a letdown. While the drive is undoubtedly beautiful, the presence of luxury homes, golf courses, and high-end resorts can sometimes detract from the natural experience. The area’s development means that in some spots, you’re more aware of the affluent lifestyle and real estate rather than untouched nature. This can be disappointing if you’re looking for a more rugged, less developed experience.

I wouldn’t let these things prevent you from going but I would try to plan ahead, by visiting at a less busy time, and by checking the weather in advance.  Ultimately, this is something you should do, but as with many tourist destinations it does have some pitfalls to be aware of.
